What does Shriners Hospital for Children for?

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a health care system that is world-renowned for pediatric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the families' ability to pay.

The mission of Shriners Hospital for Children is to:

  • Provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other special health care needs within a compassionate, family-centered and collaborative care environment
  • Provide for the education of physicians and other care professionals
  • Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families

Shriners Hospitals for Children - Boston is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding education. The Boston Shriners Hospital is located next to and affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Shriners Burns Hospital in Boston is one of three burns hospitals with the three fold purpose of treating children, conducting burn research and training medical personnel in the treatment of burn injuries. The hospitals remain pioneers in burn treatment and are actively involved in the development of artificial skin and other major advancements that will continue to revolutionize treatment of burn patients. They are staffed and equipped to treat children with acute fresh burns, children needing plastic reconstructive or restorative surgery as a result of healed burns, patients with scarring and deformity of the face and children with severe scarring resulting in contractures or inference with proper mobility of the limbs.

Shriners Hospital for Children

The Shriners Hospital in Springfield is a 40-bed orthopedic facility licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and accredited with commendation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. It provides treatments for diseases of the bones, muscles and joints for children from birth to 18 years of age. All care, while at Shriners Hospital, is provided regardless of the patients ability to pay. The Hospital is funded by the Shriners, the Shriners Hospital endowment fund, and gifts from the public.


The Springfield facility incorporates three operating rooms, state of the art medical and therapeutic equipment and advanced treatment programs in a family-centered care environment.


While the hospital is equipped and staffed to provide care for most pediatric orthopedic deformities and disorders, a special expertise has been developed in the following areas: Club Foot, Developmental Dysplasia of the hip and other hip disorders, Legg-CalvePerthes Disease, Congenital and Acquired Limb Deficiencies, Scoliosis and other Spine Deformities and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hand and Shoulder Deformities, Cleft Lip/Palate, Neuromuscular Disorders including Cerebral Palsy, Myelodysplasia (Spine Bifida), Genetic Counseling for Orthopedic Conditions, Metabolic Bone Disease and Chest Wall Deformities.


The medical staff includes three Board Certified Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons, two pediatric Anesthesiologists, a Pediatric Rheumatologist, several part time orthopedic surgeons and over 90 consulting physicians to meet the needs of 1,000 inpatients and 12,000 outpatients annually. Any child, regardless of race, religion or national origin is eligible for care at Shriners Hospitals if they are under the age of 18, their orthopedic/burn care needs can be treated by the staff and the applications is complete. There is no need to have an affiliation with a Shriner or be related to one.
